In Mt. Ilwolsan Wild Flower Park, you can see wild flowers which grow around Mt. Ilwol in Spring, Summer and Autumn. From the 1930s to the independence of Korea, this place was used as a smelting factory in which Japanese people used to smelt gold, silver, bronze and zinc mined from Mt. Ilwol . The waste from the factory severely contaminated this area and even a small plant or a small fish could not survive here. The land had been neglected for the 30 years after the independence.
Yeongyang-gun decided to start a project to clean up this area in 2001. It completely blocked the source of pollution and bring earth into the place so that it can build a park in which people can rest and enjoy wild flowers. the once-deserted land has now become the largest wild flower park in the nation.
112,000 wild plants of 64 kinds have been planted in the park. They include bleeding heart, Korean chrysanthemum, day lily, and aster koraiensis. There are also some endangered species such as pasqueflower and Korean wheel lily. You can see wild flowers which grow in the alpine regions as well. 11,000 trees were plant to build a green park and the artificial pond and waterway give visitors with an opportunity to observe wetland plants such as water lily and iris. There are a memorial to Jo Jihun, an observation deck, and a pavilion. The park provides spacious parking lot.
